Edited by IdentiNet participants Dider Bigo and Pierre Piazza, and featuring a contribution from IdentiNet participant Ilsen About, the issue explores ‘Fichage et Listing’, and contains French-language articles on the transnational traffic in personal data, the control of mobility, and the challenges of achieving a balance between public safety and civil liberties. The first ‘brown bag lunch’ IPS discussion seminar will take place at King’s College London on Thursday 28 January 2010. Co-organised by IdentiNet participant Didier Bigo, discussion will be introduced by a presentation from Andrea Molteni (University of Milan) on the functioning of the concept of the dispositif within the work of Michel Foucault, which will go on to consider its relevance to the analysis of DNA databases, especially within the Italian context (a full abstract is available here). Wine will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring along their own sandwiches. The seminar will take place from 12.30pm–2.30pm in the War Studies meeting room, which is on the sixth floor of the King’s Building on Strand Campus (map). A one-day workshop on ‘Immigration and National Identity in British History: Europe, Empire, and Commonwealth’ will take place in the Dahrendorf Room of St Antony’s College, Oxford from 10am–5pm on Monday 18 January 2010. Sponsored by the Slavic Research Centre of Hokkaido University in Japan, in association with St Antony’s College, the workshop will feature six papers on experiences of migration and identity in British imperial and colonial contexts, and will conclude with a general discussion. The French journal Cultures & Conflits has dedicated its summer issue (number 74) to the theme of ‘Security and Data Protection’. Articles explore, amongst other things, the protection of personal data in transatlantic context, enlarging access to European databases and the EU’s strategy against organized crime, and the issue closes with an interview with Armand Mattelart conducted by IdentiNet member Didier Bigo. The second seminar of the research group SUERTE (Sécurité, Union européenne et relations transatlantiques) will take place in Paris on 15 October 2009 on the theme of ‘Security, Dataveillance, and Databases’. Discussion will focus on current databases in the United States and the European Union; on the agencies and services that have access to databases; on the networks that are formed around the exchange of information; and on the relationship between data collection, security, profiling, and risk management. Paper: Police and Identification in France

Vincent Denis, a Professor of Modern History at the Université de Paris I: Panthéon-Sorbonne , is due to deliver a paper at the University of Oxford entitled ‘Police and Identification in France, From the Enlightenment to the Napoleonic Empire’. Denis has published widely on the history of individual identification in eighteenth-century and Napoleonic France, and most recently is the author of Une histoire de l’identité: France, 1715-1815 (Champvallon: Seyssel, 2008). His paper will take place on Monday 27 April 2009 at 5.15pm in the Mordan Hall of St Hugh’s College; for more information see here.
Summer School: Exploring the Newly Opened ITS Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies (CAHS) of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is currently inviting applications to participate in an international research workshop for scholars, designed to explore the recently opened archival holdings of the International Tracing Service (ITS). The workshop will run at the USHMM in Washington DC from 3-14 August 2009, and will allow researchers to explore a wide variety of ITS identity documents including: concentration camp, deportation, ghetto, transport and arrest records; 3.2 million displaced person registration cards; and the Central Name Index (CNI). A summer school on ‘New Approaches to Political History: Writing British and German Contemporary History’ will be held at the German Historical Institute, London, on 7-12 September 2009. Within a general focus on new definitions of the political and methodology, one of the four thematic strands concentrates on Politics in a Globalised World: Security and Transnationalisation, and will explore issues such as CCTV, passport controls and other international identity documents.
