The Observer newspaper ran a report yesterday on a growing breed of false documentation in the UK: fake payslips. According to the report, ‘dozens of websites are selling the high-quality documents which are being used as false proof of salary in applications to banks… [at the same time as] as mortgage lenders are being asked by the Financial Services Authority to become more reliant on documentation such as payslips’. Police are planning a crackdown on the websites, which offer a choice of designs and even calculate tax, national insurance and pension contributions on figures supplied (without verification) by clients. The third Identity in the Information Society Workshop (IDIS10), to be held in Rome on 26-28 May 2010, has just issued its call for papers on the theme of ‘Identity and Organizations’ (public or private, local or global, formal or informal). Topics might include, but are not limited to: new identity technologies; emerging practices enabled by identification processes; changing notions of identity; information and identity risks; surveillance and privacy issues; and regulatory and legal implications. The deadline for the receipt of full papers (4,000-6,000 words) is 10 December 2009; for further information and submission guidelines visit the workshop website.

The ‘1st International Conference on Villains and Villainy’ will be held at Mansfield College, Oxford on 19-21 September 2009. Papers are requested on ‘all aspects of villains and villainy’, and the proposed theme on ‘incarnations of the villainous’ would surely be incomplete without a liberal sprinkling of tricksters, impostors and identity thieves, in particular new readings of cause célébres such as the affair of the Tichborne Claimant (pictured). A new collection of essays on ‘Ethical Issues in E-Business: Models and Frameworks’ is seeking contributions. The book will be edited by Daniel E. Palmer (Kent State University) and published by IGI Global in 2010 as part of their Advances in E-Business Research series, and aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ethical issues associated with the expanding world of online transactions. Proposals are invited on a range of themes relevant to the network, including consumer identification, tracking techniques, data mining, privacy, and online security.
